I’m up early this morning.  There’s a lot going on.

Last week we finally pulled the boat out of the water for some much needed maintenance.  For those who might not know, boats that sit in salt water day in and day out need what is called a bottom job every 18-24 months.  The main purpose of a basic bottom job is to remove all of the marine growth that has accumulated on the hull during the period that has transpired since the boat was last pulled and then to inspect the keel, hull, through hull fittings, propeller, propeller shaft, the cutlass bearing, rudder and rudder shaft and the zinc cathodic protection (zinc is attached to the propeller shaft and the propeller strut that stabilizes the shaft so that the zinc corrodes sacrificially instead of the bronze propeller, shaft, and stabilizer).  After any necessary repairs are made, the hull to the waterline is then coated with an anti fouling paint specifically formulated to reduce the amount of marine buildup on the hull until the next time the boat is pulled.  The secondary reason a boat is pulled periodically from the water is to perform any other maintenance that might be required that is easier to do out of the water than in it.  We bought our boat used and though we don’t know exactly when the last bottom job was done, it was at least four years or so ago…long overdue.  The basic bottom job is pretty straight forward and, in the big scheme of things, is not too expensive.  However, in our case, there were quite a few other things that we wanted to get done.

In addition to the bottom job, we are having the entire color scheme of the boat changed.  The motif of our boat, and most sailboats is blue.  If one goes into any given marina they will find that the vast majority of bimini tops, dodgers, boot stripes, rail stripes, deck stripes, sail covers, etc are some shade of blue; our boat was no exception.  It seems the majority of boats comes from the builder with a blue color scheme and most owners simply stick with that.  Note that nothing says that the color schemes have to be blue, and going to a marina one will find that there is a sprinkling of color schemes other than blue.  Generally that will be brown, black, white, gold, silver, red, and, seldom, green.  The list of canvas and paint colors are endless, one can make their boat any color they want.  We’ve done our boat in a deep wine burgundy.

So, as my guy leaves the colors up to me, I chose the following color schemes from Awlgrip:  

Hull:  jet black anti fouling hull paint.

Boot Stripe:  3” Awlgrip Claret for the waterline stripe right above the water line, followed by 1” white hull, then a 1” stripe.

Cove Stripe:  1” Awlgrip Super Jet Black at rail, 2” white hull, followed by 2” Awlgrip Claret

Deck Stripe:  ½” Awlgrip Federal Yellow, ½” white deck, ½” Awlgrip International Orange

In addition to the striping, the boat is USCG documented and we’ve yet to change the name.  The old name will be taken off and the new one put on.  The name will be burgundy with black shading, a rose, and the color of the name of the home port changed, also in burgundy.

Other work that will or has already been done is to install a new marine radio antenna on the mast head and run new antenna wiring, check and rewire all running, steaming, and anchor lights, install an additional spot light on the lower spreader of the mast, replace some of the running rigging, install a new electronic weather station on the mast head, fiberglass and gelcoat several dings in the hull and deck, install two ½” brass ball valves on two brass seacocks, and have the entire boat compounded and waxed.  Everything but the painting, fiberglass, the compounding and wax was, or will be, done by my husband; everything should be finished by this coming Friday.

In…other news.

Saturday, I have to drive four hours to Lafayette, Louisiana and then back for a doctor’s appointment.  It’s nothing serious, just a check-up…but I dread the drive.

Next Wednesday, I have to fly to Greenville, South Carolina for a second interview.  I fly out at 6:00 AM and return at 9:30 PMthat will be a long, very stressful day.

Next Thursday, me, my mother-in-law, and my guy are flying to Santa Rosa.  The following Sunday, my daughter-in-law and her boyfriend are also flying out.  The gist of this trip is for all of us to get my mother-in-law packed up so that movers can move her into her assisted living facility near us here in Texas.  The sooner the better…for everyone.  The moves will be there Monday morning.

Two back-to-back flights with early morning departures will kill me.  I can’t wait for next week to be over…at least the interview in South Carolina.
